A northwest Indiana teacher who was unable to leave school to be picked up by a relative was found dead on the school stairs the next morning, police said.
East Chicago Police say maintenance staff found Craig Jones, 47, of Gary, dead on a second-floor stair landing at East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School on Friday.
According to a preliminary investigation, Jones called his family to ask for a ride home around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night after telling them he was working late.
But when a relative arrived a short time later, Jones never left the school and the person drove away without receiving any additional calls from him, police said in a Facebook post.
Police were called around 6:40 a.m. after Jones’ body was discovered at a school in the city, about 40 miles east of Chicago.

The cause of death remains under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Deputy Coroner Eric Graff said Saturday.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is also investigating, but police said Friday there is “no reason to believe that any foul play was involved at this time.”
