Indianapolis police shoot and kill wanted man during gunfight

Indianapolis police say they fatally shot a man suspected of multiple felonies during a shootout Thursday night.

The 48-year-old man died after being taken to a hospital, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a news release. His name was not immediately released.

He was shot and killed just before 5:30 p.m. after a police officer saw him getting into a parked vehicle on the city's east side, the statement said. Within seconds, the man got out of the car with a handgun and fired at the officers, who then returned fire and struck him, police said.

The man is wanted on warrants for charges including possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless criminal conduct, pointing a firearm and invasion of privacy stemming from an incident in which he shot people earlier this month, according to the release. It is said that it was done.

No officers or people other than the suspect were injured, the release said.

Detectives found a handgun next to the man, according to the release.

The incident will be investigated by the IMPD Major Incident Response Team and Internal Affairs.

The officer who fired the weapon was placed on administrative leave.
