New Developments in Pahargam Attack
On April 22, a terrorist attack in Pahargam, Jammu and Kashmir, marked an escalation of tensions in the region, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. In response to this attack, India executed “Operation Sindoah,” which involved targeted strikes on terrorist camps within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Misri highlighted the significance of the Pahargam attack, describing it as an “original escalation.” He stated that Indian forces acted decisively against the camps after this incident. He also identified the group behind the attack as a faction of the globally recognized terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, noting that India had previously informed the UN 1267 Sanctions Oversight Committee about this group’s activities.
Emphasizing the nature of India’s military response, Misri remarked that it was “non-de-escalatory” but precise and controlled, targeting only the terrorist infrastructure rather than military sites. He clarified that any future attacks from Pakistan would be viewed as further escalations, rather than mere reprisals.
Addressing misinformation from Pakistan, Misri pointed out that narratives undermining Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism have emerged. He challenged statements made by Pakistani officials, referencing numerous global incidents where Pakistani operatives were implicated, including high-profile cases involving figures like Osama bin Laden.
Furthermore, he mentioned how Pakistan had previously misled the international community about the status of certain terrorists, only to later confirm their existence under international pressure. Groups like Lashkar and Jaish, along with their leaders, continue to pose significant threats, according to Misri. Despite claims of efforts to combat terrorism, many such entities and individuals remain active.
