A Georgia grand jury has formally indicted the man police say killed college student Laken Riley in February.
Ann was indicted Clark County on Tuesday charged 26-year-old undocumented immigrant Jose Ybarra with 10 counts. The charges include three counts of felony murder, one count of malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to commit rape, aggravated assault, and obstruction or interference. The indictment also contained other charges for entirely separate but disturbing allegations. Ybarra was charged with one count of being a “peeping tom.”
According to the indictment, on the same day he allegedly killed Riley, Ybarra went to the University of Georgia apartment complex “with the intent of being a peeping tom by peeping through the windows and violating the privacy of Riley.” is said to have murdered. The indictment includes other shocking charges.
Prosecutors allege that Ybarra killed Riley “by inflicting blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation.” According to the indictment, Ybarra struck Riley in the head multiple times with a rock, causing her to be “severely disfigured.”
Police said Ybarra did not know Riley. Rather, they described the horrific murder as a “crime of opportunity.”
Ibarra, an immigrant from Venezuela, has lived in the United States since September 2022, when he entered the country illegally near El Paso, Texas. After entering the country illegally, Ibarra was detained and later released on parole.
Ibarra later moved to New York City, where he had an encounter with police, immigration officials said. Last September, Ybarra was charged with felonies for “injury to a child under the age of 17 and violation of a motor vehicle license,” but was released before Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed for custody. New York City is a “sanctuary city.”
Ybarra then moved to Georgia last fall.
Sadly, ICE was only able to apply for detention against Ybarra after Riley’s murder.
