Former Politician Ann Widdecombe Murdered at Age 78

Former British politician and pro-life advocate, Ann Widdecombe, was tragically killed in her home earlier this month at the age of 78. On Tuesday, a 28-year-old individual named Joshua Kerry from Rotherham appeared in court, facing murder charges in connection with her death while she was having lunch.

Widdecombe was discovered deceased in her Dartmoor home on July 9, after her gardener found her lying face down on the kitchen floor with a severe head injury. Prosecutors revealed that the gardener reported this alarming sight to the authorities.

Initially, local police began an investigation, which escalated when the UK’s counter-terrorism unit took over on July 13. This shift occurred after Kerry was arrested on suspicion of murder and potential terrorist activity.

According to prosecutor Kashif Malik, Widdecombe was attacked while she was eating around noon. Allegedly, Kerry drove to her residence, entered through the front door, and assaulted her with a hammer, subsequently stealing her wallet and fleeing the crime scene.

The provisional cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, with prosecutors indicating she had endured 21 strikes with the weapon.

Authorities are delving into Kerry’s possible motives, which may include political affiliations or even terrorist connections.

Kerry only confirmed his identity in court and has yet to enter a plea. Reports from the courtroom described him as appearing “emotionless” during the proceedings.

Widdecombe had a distinguished career, serving for more than two decades in the House of Commons and even holding a ministerial position under Prime Minister John Major. A notable figure in the Brexit campaign, she advocated for the UK to regain control over its borders and was recently a spokesperson for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party. Beyond politics, she gained popularity after participating in shows like “Strictly Come Dancing” and “Celebrity Big Brother.”

Known for her pro-life stance, Widdecombe was a longtime supporter of Right To Life UK. Following her passing, the organization highlighted her strong advocacy record as a source of inspiration for future pro-life politicians.

“Ann’s forthright views — whether you agreed with her or not — were always trenchantly, intelligently, and honestly expressed — and never with malice,” stated Lord David Alton, a former member of Parliament and prominent pro-life advocate.
