Measles Exposure at Concert and Mall in Maricopa County
PHOENIX — Officials from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health have reported potential measles exposure for attendees of a concert at Chase Field and shoppers at an East Valley mall.
An individual with measles possibly exposed others during the Fuerza Regida concert at Chase Field from 7 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, July 12. This person, who does not reside in the county, also visited the Chandler Fashion Center on July 13.
Additional exposure locations include:
- The Taco Spot: 885 N 54th Street in Chandler on July 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Sonesta Select Hotel: 920 N 54th Street in Chandler on July 12 and July 13.
- Chase Field: 401 E Jefferson Street in Phoenix on July 12 from 7 p.m. to midnight.
- IHOP: 5020 E Ray Road in Phoenix on July 13 from midnight to 3:30 a.m.
- bb.q Chicken: 1900 W Chandler Boulevard in Chandler on July 13 from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Chandler Fashion Center: 3111 W Chandler Boulevard on July 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Individuals who visited any of these places should monitor for symptoms until August 3.
This year, Maricopa County has seen 25 confirmed measles cases, a significant rise compared to just one case annually over the past 30 years.
According to Ariella Dale, Ph.D., chief science officer at MCDPH, “The continuing identification of new measles cases and exposures highlights how easily this virus spreads. We have an effective, trusted vaccine that has kept the virus from spreading like this for decades. As a community, we can use that same tool to stop spread now.”
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed at these locations should verify their vaccination status and be on the lookout for symptoms, which may include:
- High fever (> 101°F)
- Red, watery eyes
- Cough
- Runny nose
- A red, raised, blotchy rash that typically starts at the hairline on the face and spreads downward.
Measles is highly contagious but can be prevented with a two-dose vaccine. Health officials indicate that unvaccinated individuals face a 90% chance of contracting the virus if exposed.
