Michigan Couple Welcomes Baby in McDonald’s Parking Lot
A couple from Michigan had quite the unexpected experience after their baby girl was born just last month in a McDonald’s parking lot. Alice Rotunda, 32, was expecting her fourth child in late August and had even been sent home from the hospital on August 8. But, just three days later, on her birthday, she found herself in labor again—this time, it was relentless.
That evening, Alice called her mother to arrange for her three children—Genesis, 7, Kevin III, 4, and Boone—while things took a sudden turn. “If I had to have a baby in my car, that’s what I was trying to do,” she recalled. But, as they realized they wouldn’t make it to the hospital, Alice and her husband decided to inform the 911 dispatcher they were at a gas station.
Even though it was nearly 3 a.m., the gas station was crowded and well-lit. Her husband opted, somewhat nervously, to drive a bit further to the nearby McDonald’s, which was not in operation at the time. “Pain focuses on what’s going on with you,” she said, recalling the drive. “I only had a moment of thought as we were pulling into McDonald’s.”
She continued, “You just do what you have to do. There’s no point in fighting anything.” Surprisingly, her husband—who usually feels queasy at the sight of blood—ended up delivering the baby himself. “I’m so grateful for him to go from there to catch his own child,” she said, obviously relieved.
The couple welcomed baby Matilda around 3:30 a.m., and Alice felt a huge wave of relief when she heard the newborn scream, indicating that all was well. Having faced high-risk pregnancies with all her children, this situation was a unique twist for her. Matilda’s delivery had initially been scheduled for induction the following week, like her siblings.
The paramedics arrived about ten minutes after Matilda’s birth to transport the family to the hospital for further checks. Alice expressed her gratitude, saying, “Although there are no complications for the baby or me, the whole experience is wild, and I’m very grateful.” Ironically, she had wanted the baby to arrive on her birthday; Matilda decided to wait just a few hours more.
Matilda’s unique entrance quickly earned her a nickname, “McTilly,” courtesy of Alice’s brother-in-law, who jokingly suggested it to her husband. “Everyone gets a kick out of it,” Alice mentioned, clearly amused.
Even local McDonald’s outlets have joined in the celebration of this special moment. One Facebook post read, “Alice and Kevin Rotunda got more than they ordered in the parking lot at Schoolcraft McDonald’s,” celebrating the new baby under the iconic golden arches. The post concluded, “And as for Baby Matilda, she’s already part of the McFamily!”
