The Canadiens introduced an unusual promotion involving hot dogs during a game on Saturday.
While the team was playing against the Red Wings, an inflatable hot dog and bun made their way onto the ice at Bell Centre during a timeout in the third period. Fans cheered as they tried to get the large hot dog into the equally oversized bun situated across the arena. With the words “Go Habs Go!” boldly displayed, the inflatable hot dog leaped over the glass and landed on the ice, while the bun, bearing the Canadiens logo, closely followed, barely clearing the glass to land near the bench.
The bun did create a bit of chaos.
As it descended, captain Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovský made attempts to poke at it with their sticks. It even struck Noah Dobson and Zachary Bolduc as it bounced around. Although some players and officials looked a bit annoyed, the fans enjoyed the spectacle, laughing and applauding.
This event is part of a new promotion introduced at Canadiens games, with Saturday marking its debut at Bell Centre.
“Yeah, that didn’t work out too good for them,” Suzuki remarked.
Montreal’s Kaiden Guhle shared his thoughts, saying, “That was crazy. I covered my mouth because I was laughing, and no one else was really laughing and it was just me. I’ve never seen that before. But the fans were having fun, so that’s good.”
The inflatable hot dog promotion, inspired by similar antics during MLB games, has captured attention, notably when the hot dog and bun were assembled at Kauffman Stadium during a Royals game in September.
It’s unsure whether the Canadiens will continue this fan activity in future games.
In the end, Montreal won the match during a shootout, with a final score of 1-0. This puts the Canadiens at a 2-2-1 record, placing them sixth in the Atlantic division. They are scheduled to face Buffalo on Tuesday night, while the Red Wings (1-3-1) will prepare to host the Devils.
