Inflation Is Result of ‘Slow’ Post-COVID Recovery, Not Harris

Speaking on “CNN News Central” on Wednesday, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware), co-chair of the Harris-Waltz campaign, said inflation is a “consequence of the recovery” from the pandemic, that the recovery has been “slow, long and difficult,” and that inflation is not the fault of 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

After Coons cited strong economic numbers and said economic indicators were “very good across the board,” co-host Boris Sanchez asked, “But Senator, you can’t deny that the same amount of money is not enough for many people, including Social Security recipients, because the cost of owning or renting a home is going up, the cost of everyday items is going up. So how do you, Senator, create a different narrative about the economy that incorporates the burden that many Americans are feeling despite some of the strong numbers that you’ve presented?”

Coons responded, “Well, Boris, the first thing is to put herself in the shoes of the people, to recognize that the recovery from a poorly handled pandemic has been slow, long and difficult, and to remind people that it was the former president who mishandled the pandemic and that the resulting economic dislocation and job losses and high inflation as we recover from the pandemic are not her fault. But hearing the continuing concerns and costs that people have, from seniors to young people looking to buy their first apartment or home, she must, and she has, come up with concrete proposals to address housing costs. The Biden-Harris Administration is working hard to improve housing affordability in America, and I expect you’ll hear more about that from Vice President Harris this week and in the coming weeks.”
