In an interview with ABC News on Thursday, White House senior adviser Gene Sperling said that while “the public has had a tough few years,” the PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) price index reading was “very normal.” “We’re getting closer,” he said, “and prices are fluctuating.” “In the right direction” and “moderation.” But you can’t expect it not to rise.
“The last few years since the pandemic have been tough,” Sperling said, but “inflation is coming down.” In fact, by this measurement he was actually 2.4%, and not including food and gas he was 2.8%. It’s not quite enough, but it’s very close to normal. And there are a lot of different areas where prices are coming down. ”
He added: “I think people have had a tough couple of years. In 2022, we’ve seen variants exist, the global economy is recovering, we’ve had supply chain issues, we’ve seen prices go up. And I think it’s natural for people to feel that the last few years have been a little tough. And there’s a lag time before people start saying, “Hey, now I see prices moving in the right direction.” There may be. Also, sometimes the prices of things like eggs, lettuce, and milk are going down. People say so, but they’re still higher than they were before, and I respect that. But what I want them to know is that it’s still valuable to understand the facts, and there’s nothing wrong with communicating the fact that prices are easing. ”
Mr. Sperling continued. “But what I want them to know is that this president is fighting to reduce costs. And the fight that’s going on right now is about junk fees, price gouging, the prescription drug prices that the president has lowered. cost, is being done around eliminating the price of insulin. He’s going even further on these grounds, fighting to reduce childcare costs. So if you want to fight, families If we want to talk about what we can do to lower the costs of the United States, we would encourage Republicans to work with this president on the numerous proposals he has made to reduce costs. …and we We’re going to do everything we can. We’re going to respect that people are frustrated, or some people are frustrated, but that doesn’t mean we’ve lost people’s wages over the past year. It does not follow that it is not true that the economy has risen more than inflation.
Host Kyla Phillips then pointed out that food and gas prices are rising.
Mr Sperling said: “No price increases means zero inflation or deflation. Let’s talk respectfully about whether or not it’s going down, and whether it’s actually going down. And let’s talk respectfully about whether people are still having a hard time, the last few years have been tough, and that’s why we I salute you for being the reason we are still fighting for them.”
