A friend of the Reiner family shared some troubling insights with Page Six about Nick’s demeanor in the weeks leading up to the tragic events. He described Nick as seemingly the ideal son, helping out around the house and joining in family meals.
Barry Markowitz, a Hollywood cinematographer and a close family friend, noted that Nick, 32, is now in custody under suspicion of murdering his father, the noted director Rob Reiner, 78, and his mother, Michelle, 68. Markowitz suggested that Nick likely experienced an unexpected mental breakdown, as he showed no indication of the violence that would follow.
Another friend, photographer Ace, recalled his stay with the Reiners around the time of a film premiere, describing it as “awesome.” He shared fond memories of family dinners and playful interactions, mentioning that he never sensed any oddity in their relationships.
Markowitz also pointed out that Nick, although having a troubled history with rehab, seemed to be in a better place during his stay. He reflected on a warm family dinner where they enjoyed each other’s company, reinforcing the love that surrounded them.
Despite this, Markowitz speculated that something must have triggered Nick’s violent actions, as he found it hard to believe that he would have premeditated the murders.
“It was someone flipping out, and when someone is mentally disturbed, there might not even be a clear reason,” he remarked, referring to the chaotic nature of such situations.
Markowitz, who had a close bond with Rob and viewed him as a brother, expressed disbelief that Rob would have ever thought Nick posed a danger. He emphasized Nick’s nonviolent nature and mentioned that if there had been any concern for safety, Rob would have addressed it.
Tragically, the couple was found dead in their upscale Brentwood home. Nick’s arrest came shortly after, as he faced serious allegations in connection with their deaths.
