Insurgent supported by Mamdani and newcomer from DSA falls short in NYC council election

Setback for Mayor Mamdani in City Council Race

In a notable setback for Mayor Zoran Mamdani, his chosen candidates faced significant challenges in the City Council election in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village on Tuesday.

While the election results are still pending, early reports indicated that Carl Wilson was leading with just over 43% of the vote. Since no candidate secured a majority, officials will resort to a ranked-choice voting process to determine the winner.

Mamdani’s candidate, Lindsay Boylan, garnered slightly more than 25%, and Leila Roe-Gishko received around 20%, according to almost complete scanner reports.

This outcome is seen as a major blow to Mamdani, who had pushed for Boylan—once a staffer for the former Prime Minister, Andrew Cuomo—hoping to fill a vacancy left by Eric Bottcher, who was elected as a state senator.

The election results raise questions about Mamdani’s influence and whether his popularity can translate into victories for his allies. It seems his efforts to empower Democratic Socialists in office may face hurdles.

Wilson’s strong lead also highlighted a significant victory for council leader Julie Menin, who actively campaigned against Boylan, calling the latter’s political transition opportunistic.

Before all ranking rounds were finalized, Menin expressed her approval of the results, dubbing the outcome a “huge victory” for Wilson.

Boylan, who recently affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America and the Working Families Party, received support from Mamdani, who labeled her as the “progressive choice.” He claimed that Wilson’s campaign was backed by some of the same donors associated with Cuomo’s previous mayoral bid.

“She was the first to call out Andrew Cuomo,” Mamdani said. “Now it appears that some of Cuomo’s key supporters are trying to stop her.” This sentiment captured the ongoing tension surrounding the election.

Mamdani actively campaigned for Boylan as votes were cast, although it ultimately wasn’t enough for a win. Wilson’s previous experience as Bottcher’s chief of staff gave him an edge within the local political landscape.

His campaign focused on housing access, public safety, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants. Notably, Wilson is the only openly gay candidate in a district that has enjoyed LGBTQ representation since 1991.

As a likely new council member, Wilson will be pivotal for Menin, who is strategizing on potential veto overrides against measures proposed by Mamdani, such as a bill aimed at creating safe zones around schools to facilitate police operations.

The margin for such overrides is slim, needing just four votes to succeed.
