Introducing Merlin, the popular Mexican duck making waves at the World Cup

Marlin the Duck Becomes Unofficial Mascot for Mexico’s World Cup

MEXICO CITY — A domesticated duck named Marlin, decked out in a tiny Mexican shirt and custom duck socks, has captivated soccer enthusiasts, emerging as the unexpected unofficial mascot of Mexico’s World Cup efforts.

Marlin gained popularity during street festivities following the co-hosts’ 2-0 victory against South Africa in last week’s World Cup opener.

This spirited duck meandered through the bustling crowd on Paseo de la Reforma in the capital, where fans were celebrating Mexico’s goal.

Passersby captured the delightful moment on their phones, and the videos went viral, with many fans calling for Marlin to be named the official World Cup mascot for Mexico.

“We’re very respectful,” noted Carla Gomez, Marlin’s owner and a street vendor. “We have great respect for the axolotl, which is the mascot for Mexico City, as well as FIFA’s jaguar. To be honest, we prefer to stay away from controversy.”

Gomez, who typically sells drinks with her son Christian, never anticipated Marlin would attract this kind of attention.

“It felt like just another ordinary day for us,” she remarked. “I thought we’d pass by unnoticed, never imagining there would be such a stir around Marlin.”

Now, Gomez embraces her role in her duck’s newfound fame. Families often pause to snap selfies with the feathered celebrity, and Marlin can be seen cooling off in public fountains.

“I think of myself as Marlin’s mother now,” Gomez added. “It’s been quite a surprise. Knowing that Marlin is considered the unofficial mascot of the World Cup… it makes us very happy, especially that people love my duck.”

Emulating Paul the Octopus, Marlin has even begun to showcase his knack for predicting game outcomes, recently opting for Mexico over South Korea when posed with their flags.

Mexico won 1-0 against South Korea in Group A on Thursday and is set to take on the Czech Republic on June 24.
