Vaibhav Taneja’s Remarkable Compensation
Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer of Indian descent, earned $139 million (roughly 1,157 crores) in 2024. While Taneja’s base salary was $400,000 (Rs 3.33), he significantly outperformed Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, who made $79.1 million (Rs 658 trillion), as well as Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, who received $10.73 million (Rs 89).
At 47, Taneja, who has been with Tesla since 2017, saw his compensation increase. This boost occurred as the stock price climbed from around $250 (Rs 20,800) at the award’s initiation to $342 (Rs 28,400) by May 19, 2025.
Taneja’s earnings surpass the previous record of $86 million (Rs 715 crores) achieved by Nikola’s CFO in 2020, marking him as one of the top CFOs before Nikola’s bankruptcy filing in 2024.
About Vaibhav Taneja
- Vaibhav Taneja is a certified public accountant with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Delhi University.
- He spent 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) in both India and the United States from 1999 to 2016.
- Taneja joined SolarCity Corporation in March 2016, where he initially worked as Vice President and then as Corporate Controller. After Tesla acquired SolarCity that same year, he successfully combined the accounting teams of both firms.
- He began at Tesla as an assistant corporate controller in 2017 and was later appointed corporate controller in 2018. By 2019, he had risen to Chief Accounting Officer.
- In 2021, Taneja became the Director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited. He took on the role of Chief Financial Officer in August 2023.
