Intruder Caught Just Steps from 'Today' Show During Live Broadcast

Intruder at NBC’s Today Show

On Thursday, Craig Melvin, host of the Today show, dealt with an unexpected situation when an intruder bypassed security at NBC’s New York headquarters. The man approached Melvin near Studio 1A.

Reportedly, Melvin used a racial slur during the encounter and called for security. The New York Police Department later arrested the intruder.

In a statement, NBC confirmed, “There was no altercation and no one was injured.” They emphasized that they are reviewing the incident and their security measures to ensure a safe environment for visitors and staff.

The intruder, identified as Andrew Truelove, 41, faces multiple charges including theft, menacing, trespassing, and harassment, categorized as hate crimes, as noted by the police.

Details surrounding the security breach indicate it happened just before 9 a.m. during the live airing of the show. The individual entered the lobby and ascended to the second floor through an entrance that was less monitored.

According to police accounts, Melvin confronted Truelove, leading to an encounter that lasted roughly eight to ten seconds. The intruder was quickly detained by building security before police took him into custody without further incident. Officers had received alerts regarding “unusual activity” at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, which houses several NBC studios.

Addressing viewers the next day, Melvin reassured them, saying, “We’re safe.” He also expressed gratitude on social media for the support and concerns raised by the audience.

Reports later surfaced that Truelove claimed he was seeking weatherman Al Roker, but the reasons behind this were unclear. This incident highlights a lesser-discussed reality in the television industry—news personalities occasionally face obsessive fans or erratic viewers.

In the past, there have been multiple instances where intrusions of a similar nature occurred in the city, often for prank-related purposes. One past intruder had been on probation after an assault incident elsewhere.

Melvin’s journey at NBC has included various roles, and he transitioned from being a newscaster to becoming a full-time host in the past year. Previously, he also hosted on MSNBC.
