Investigation into Car Bomb Threat Against NYC Mayoral Candidate

The office of Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for mayor in New York City, announced on Thursday that it is looking into a car bomb threat directed at the New York City Police Department (NYPD), despite the fact that the hate crimes unit does not have ownership of the vehicle in question.

“After receiving multiple death threats and racist messages, Assembly Mamdani’s office is collaborating with the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force in this ongoing investigation,” the statement from his office said. “Zohran doesn’t have a car, but the nature of the threats is alarming, and we are taking every precaution necessary.”

“It’s disheartening, yet not surprising, considering the millions spent on dehumanizing rhetoric that fuels division and hatred,” the statement continued. “Violence and racism have no place in our politics. Zoran is committed to ensuring safe and affordable living in New York.”

Mamdani, who aspires to be New York City’s first Muslim mayor, has faced criticisms from rivals, including former governor Andrew Cuomo. This week, tensions in Middle Eastern politics have escalated, especially amid ongoing conflicts involving Israel and Iran.

In a recent debate, Mamdani remarked that “Israel has a right to exist,” but clarified his stance by stating he does not equate that to Israel being a “Jewish state,” expressing instead the need for equal rights for all.

The NYPD has been contacted regarding the investigation into the car bomb threat directed at Mamdani.

Cuomo, despite differing political views, condemned the threat against Mamdani, calling it “a vicious act of political violence” that is unacceptable. He emphasized that such threats, along with others like them, should be strongly condemned.

Another Democratic mayoral candidate, City Secretary Brad Lander, also spoke out against the threat, describing it as a manifestation of “Islamophobic violence” and asserting that there should be no place for hatred in New York City.

Lander himself faced legal issues earlier this week when he was arrested by the Department of Homeland Security for allegedly assaulting a federal officer.
