John Brennan and James Comey Under Investigation
The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey are facing criminal investigations linked to their involvement in the 2016 Trump-Russia conspiracy allegations.
This investigation focuses on whether Brennan and Comey conducted an improper inquiry into President Donald Trump during the 2016 election regarding claims of Russian interference, as reported by Fox News.
A source from the Department of Justice indicated that CIA Director John Ratcliffe had presented evidence of “fraud” to Brennan’s FBI counterpart, Kash Patel, which subsequently triggered this investigation.
While specific details concerning Comey’s inquiry remain undisclosed, the FBI is reportedly looking into the interactions between the two as part of a “conspiracy.”
This investigative move follows Ratcliffe’s declassification of a review from the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which determined that Russia attempted to influence the 2016 election by supporting Trump.
Ratcliffe’s findings pointed out that the 2017 ICA exhibited numerous “procedural anomalies” and suggested that it was executed in haste.
Moreover, the review criticized the inclusion of the Steele dossier—documents that have been heavily discredited and assert that Trump and his associates have connections to Russia. This dossier was first commissioned by Fusion GPS for Trump’s Republican opponents and later taken up by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
Ratcliffe’s assessment concluded that “the decision by the agency to include the Steele Dossier undermines the reliability of important decisions.”
Additionally, a newly declassified email sent to Brennan in December 2016 by the former CIA Deputy Director revealed objections to including the Steele-related documents in the ICA, which could compromise “the reliability of the overall paper.”
According to Ratcliffe’s review, “Brennan has indicated a preference for narrative consistency over analytical integrity.” It seems that he prioritized the conformity of related documents with established theories rather than addressing genuine validity concerns.
Brennan previously testified before the House Judiciary Committee, stating his belief that the ICA report should not have included these related documents.
“The CIA was very opposed to referring or including Steele documents in the Intelligence Community assessment,” Brennan remarked in May 2023.
