Drunk Driving Incident in Iowa Ends with Collision but No Serious Injuries
Recently released dashcam footage captures the alarming moment a suspected drunk driver ignored a deputy’s siren, ultimately resulting in a head-on collision on a highway south of Story City, Iowa. Luckily, there were no severe injuries despite the destruction of three vehicles.
On November 8, the Story County Sheriff’s Office reported that a deputy on patrol along Highway 69 noticed a car behaving erratically before it drifted into oncoming traffic.
The video shows the deputy pursuing the vehicle, siren wailing, as it navigates the wrong side of the road. Just before the collision, you can see the cruiser closing in on the erratic driver.
About 13 seconds later, the driver crashed into a sedan and then collided with a pickup truck that subsequently hit the lead car. The crash scattered debris everywhere—there was glass, twisted metal, and personal belongings strewn across the highway.
Deputies quickly arrived on the scene to offer assistance. Body camera footage reveals one deputy checking the crash vehicle, opening the back door where the airbag had deployed, while some occupants from the other two cars had already exited the vehicles.
“Thankfully, no major injuries were reported,” the sheriff’s office commented, stressing that such accidents are preventable and urging the public to never drive while under the influence.
The driver was apprehended and faces several charges, including driving under the influence, operating a vehicle on the wrong side of the highway, and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly impaired or distracted driving can escalate into dangerous situations. The investigation remains ongoing.
