Iowa’s new abortion law took effect Monday, banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that there is no constitutional right to abortion in the state, the same year the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“No right is more sacred than life,” Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds said in June. “I’m pleased that the Iowa Supreme Court has upheld the will of the Iowan people.”
Meanwhile, across the US, four states ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, and 14 states have near-total bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, called it a “historic day for the state of Iowa.”
But abortion providers are fighting the new law by making abortion more accessible in neighboring states.
“The ban that goes into effect today will impact Iowans for generations to come,” said Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood’s North Central States chapter.
Abortion is likely to be a key focus of the 2024 election, with Republicans hailing Iowa’s new law and Democrats criticizing it as a loss of freedom for women, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign likely to focus on the abortion issue in an effort to woo swing voters.
The latest legislation was passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature during a special 2023 session, but was quickly challenged in lawsuits by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Planned Parenthood Federation of the North Central States and the Emma Goldman Clinic.
Additionally, in June, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that abortions cannot be performed in the state after six weeks of pregnancy and ordered the abortion ban lifted.
As for the impact of the election, former President Donald Trump is expected to win Iowa, but Democrats are hoping to retake at least one of the state’s congressional seats and reduce the size of the Republican majority in the Iowa General Assembly.
