Iowa State athletic director feels emotional after Matt Campbell's exit

Matt Campbell Leaves Iowa State for Penn State

Jamie Pollard, the athletic director at Iowa State, became emotional while discussing Matt Campbell’s decision to accept the head coaching position at Penn State.

Pollard, who is 60 years old, expressed his sadness but also noted that Campbell doesn’t owe anything to Iowa State. “It’s tough, but I get it,” Pollard shared with reporters. “After being in this field for a while, you realize how challenging these roles can be. They really wear you down in ways fans might not see. Campbell did amazing things for us, but he didn’t always get to show that in front of his family and friends. There were moments he could have walked away, but he didn’t.”

Pollard also pointed out that while it’s a bittersweet moment, life continues. “None of us are permanent. Life moves on, just like the sun rises every morning.” He reflected on Campbell’s immense contributions: “He doesn’t owe us because he’s given more than we could ever expect from a head coach. But, as they say, the page turns.”

Penn State officially announced Campbell as their new head coach, pending Board of Governors approval next week.

At 46, Campbell has made history at Iowa State, being the winningest coach there with a record of 72-55 over ten seasons. He led the team to eight winning seasons, including the current one with an 8-4 record. Under his guidance, Iowa State made two appearances in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Before Iowa State, Campbell spent five seasons as the head coach at Toledo, amassing a record of 35-15. His hiring at Penn State comes shortly after the school parted ways with James Franklin nearly two months ago.
