iPhone Users Can Now Add Passports to Apple Digital Wallet
With the holiday travel rush approaching, iPhone users can now integrate their passport details into Apple Digital Wallet.
Apple announced on Wednesday the launch of a new “digital ID” feature, allowing users to incorporate their U.S. passport information into Apple Wallet. Travelers who lack a Real ID can simply scan their passport details at airport readers.
This digital ID will be introduced in a beta phase at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports to help “verify identity during domestic travel.”
However, it’s important to note that this digital ID isn’t a substitute for a physical passport. It can’t be used for international travel or crossing borders.
Currently, Apple permits users in 12 states and Puerto Rico to store their driver’s license or state ID in Apple Wallet. Similarly, the TSA already accepts some form of digital ID in at least 16 states and Puerto Rico.
The agency claims that travelers will be able to pass through over 250 TSA checkpoints more quickly and securely with this system.
How to Add Your Passport
To add your passport, open the Wallet app on your iPhone, tap the plus sign at the top, and pick the “Digital ID” option. If you can’t locate it, simply type “digital ID” in the search bar.
You will need to scan the photo page of your passport using your device’s camera.
Next, hold your iPhone above the chip on the back of your passport to authenticate the data.
The last step requires taking a selfie and then following prompts to confirm your identity through various head movements, like turning your head or closing your eyes.
Once this verification process concludes, your digital ID will be successfully added to your Wallet.
Using Your Digital ID
Presenting your digital ID is akin to making a purchase on your iPhone.
Press the side button twice to access the Wallet app, then tap your digital ID among your cards.
At the TSA kiosk, simply hold your phone or Apple Watch over the reader. The device will capture your photo and allow you to verify your name and date of birth on your phone screen.
You’ll also need to authenticate these details with your phone’s facial or fingerprint scanner.
Security Features
Apple assures that passport data is encrypted and stored on the device. It’s designed so that no one can track when or where the digital ID is presented or viewed.
By using face or fingerprint recognition, only the ID owner can access their information.
Also, iPhone users won’t need to unlock or hand over their device to display their digital ID.
Where Is Mobile ID Accepted?
According to the TSA, more than a dozen states currently allow some type of mobile ID at airport checkpoints.
The states include Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico.
For further details, travelers can visit the TSA website.
