Iran Seizes Two Oil Tankers Amid Ongoing U.S.-Iran Negotiations

On Thursday, Iran captured two foreign oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, citing suspicions of fuel smuggling. This event occurred just before important U.S.-Iran negotiations set to take place in Oman.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) reported that the vessels were taken near Farsi Island, alleging that they were carrying about 1 million liters of illicit fuel. Reports indicate that a crew of 15 foreigners was detained and transferred to Iranian judicial authorities.

The IRGC claimed that these ships were part of a broader organized smuggling operation that had been active in the region for several months. Iranian officials detailed that the vessels were identified through surveillance efforts and seized during a coordinated naval operation, crucial for global energy supply routes.

Iranian state media framed the action as a significant move against illegal fuel trafficking, although the specific nationality or destination of the vessels was not disclosed.

The seizure is taking place amid rising tensions and hostile rhetoric towards the United States. Former Iranian minister Ezatollah Zarghami has issued stark warnings about violence in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil transport.

“I am convinced that the Strait of Hormuz will become a place of genocide and hell for the United States,” Zarghami stated, emphasizing that Iran intends to assert its historical claim over the strait.

He continued, suggesting that U.S. actions in the region are seen as mere manipulation of ships rather than meaningful engagement.

As these tensions escalated, Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Oman on Friday. They had just concluded discussions in Abu Dhabi regarding matters related to Russia and Ukraine.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed the talks were still progressing, emphasizing that “diplomacy happens all the time,” framing it as a primary focus for the administration.
