Iran Claims It Will Maintain Nuclear Program 'No Matter What'

Iran’s Nuclear Program Developments

On Wednesday, Iran’s Islamic theocracy expressed its intention to sustain its nuclear programs “under any circumstances,” dismissing claims that recent US airstrikes on uranium enrichment facilities have deterred their nuclear ambitions.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that Iran is committed to preserving its right to “enjoy nuclear energy under any circumstances.” Additionally, officials from Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) reiterated the country’s determination to “expand” its nuclear efforts in response to international criticism and military actions from the US and Israel.

This week, both US officials and the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed significant damage to Iran’s nuclear program following President Donald Trump’s airstrikes on several key sites. Trump described the strikes as “magnificent military success,” which he claimed effectively neutralized the threat posed by these facilities.

Iran has pursued nuclear development for years, often expressing hostility toward Israel and the United States, with frequent chants of “death to America” and “death to Israel.” Although Trump aimed to address Iran’s nuclear threats through diplomatic talks, those negotiations faltered as Iranian diplomats refused to agree to any restrictions on uranium enrichment. They stand out, really, as no other nation is enriching uranium at Iran’s rate.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on June 12, condemned Iran for failing to adhere to international laws and violating commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Shortly thereafter, Israel initiated “Operation Lion of Lions” targeting high-ranking Iranian military personnel and facilities, leading Iran to retaliate against Israeli centers, resulting in civilian casualties.

Trump announced a ceasefire on Monday. Initially shaky, the ceasefire held as of the latest reports. Interestingly, Iran seemed reluctant to acknowledge this ceasefire publicly, instead holding a parade to proclaim its “victory” over Israel and the US.

Baghaei reaffirmed that Iran will persist in enriching uranium, emphasizing that the nation’s rights to peaceful nuclear energy remain intact under the NPT.

Furthermore, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for the AEOI, insisted that the country’s nuclear program will continue to expand regardless of the recent assaults. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi expressed skepticism about the US assessment post-strike, suggesting significant damage had been done but noting that it was difficult to quantify.

Grossi remarked, “I think there are too many ‘disappearances’.” The damage suffered by the nuclear program is substantial, according to his analysis based on satellite imagery of the Fordow facility, which appears to be out of operation.

Khamenei delivered a national address celebrating what he called a victory over the US and Israel, contrasting this claim with evidence of considerable destruction within Iran. He remarked, “Some congratulations to the great Iranian nation,” attributing success to military operations that allegedly dismantled much of the adversaries’ capabilities.

In his speech, Khamenei asserted that the Islamic Republic had decisively hurt US interests in the region, particularly concerning its military bases.
