Iran Condemns US Attack on Military Leadership
Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Saeed Iravani, expressed strong condemnation during a Security Council meeting on Saturday regarding a US airstrike that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. He characterized the attack as a double standard and emphasized Iran’s right to self-defense.
Iravani criticized the United States for engaging in military actions against sovereign nations under the guise of “domestic” issues, which he believes undermines international peace. “Neither the Charter nor international law accepts a state’s internal challenges as a valid reason for another state’s use of force,” he stated, warning that adherence to the rule of law was at risk of being replaced by brute force.
The ambassador confirmed, “Iran will continue to assert its right to self-defense firmly and without hesitation until the assault is completely and clearly stopped.”
This attack follows President Donald Trump’s initiation of Operation Epic Fury on Saturday morning, prompted by ongoing Iranian nuclear development efforts.
In Trump’s comments about the attack, he reiterated that it has always been US policy, particularly under his administration, to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. “They can never have nuclear weapons,” he reaffirmed emphatically.
Trump further explained that the strike was a defensive measure aimed at “protecting the American people by eliminating an imminent threat from the Iranian regime,” attributing it to Iran’s persistent nuclear program.
Iravani argued that this assault represents a continuation of what he described as years of American hostility towards Iran. “Mr. President,” he remarked, “this morning, the U.S., in coordination with the Israeli regime, undertook its second unprovoked and planned invasion of our country in recent months,” recalling last year’s strike on a nuclear facility.
He accused the US and Israeli officials of openly admitting their intent to undermine Iran’s sovereignty and pursue regime change.
On the other side, US UN Ambassador Mike Walz countered Iravani’s accusations, stating, “For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted ‘Death to America’ and sought to eradicate Israel, engaged in continuous acts of violence and carnage.”
Interestingly, Iravani did not mention any ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran regarding the nuclear program during his comments.
