Iran directs Houthis to get ready to shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Iran Threatens to Close Strait of Hormuz, Potentially Impacting Global Oil Prices

Recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated as Iran threatens to block critical shipping routes and impose new conditions. Reports have emerged indicating that ships have been under attack from Iranian drones since March. This uncertainty around the vital waterway has led to a 2% drop in oil prices, affecting global markets.

Furthermore, Iran has allegedly instructed Yemen’s Houthi militants to prepare for potential closure of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait if the United States targets Iran’s infrastructure. Experts have expressed concerns that even if the Houthis can’t fully block the waters, their threats could significantly disrupt global shipping.

Nadwa Al-Dawsari from the Middle East Institute emphasized the importance of taking these threats seriously, especially after recent U.S. actions against Iran. She mentioned that the Iranian government has indicated that responses could include measures affecting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

Sources disclosed that Iranian leaders have discussed employing the Houthis to obstruct this crucial strait and that the group has already deployed missiles and drones in anticipation of potential orders to attack ships.

Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former British ambassador to Yemen, warned that a resurgence of Houthi maritime operations could instigate broader conflicts. He speculated that if the Houthis fully resumed their campaign against Red Sea shipping, it would trigger international backlash and possible military responses from allies.

Al-Dawsari pointed out that while Houthis had not engaged in maritime assaults recently, they have continued to enhance their capabilities with advanced weaponry. Although a complete blockade of the Strait is unlikely, there could still be significant disruptions to shipping, potentially leading to increased risks and costs for commercial traffic.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is crucial as it links the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, marking it as one of the most essential maritime chokepoints in the world. Any attack in this region would have serious repercussions, especially since Iran has already disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which historically routes about one-fifth of global energy supplies.

Currently, around 7% of the world’s energy supply transits through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, with Saudi Arabia sending a significant portion of its energy exports through the port of Yanbu.

The new directive from Iran raises questions about its influence over the Houthis and their military decisions. Reports suggest that actions against the strait could be overly strategic, more reflective of Iran’s interests rather than solely those of the Houthis. Some sources indicate that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps in Yemen likely control the timing and nature of any military responses.

Recent threats have reignited scrutiny of Iran’s weapons support to the Houthis, which has bolstered their missile and drone capabilities. Commentators have expressed alarm over failures to address Yemen’s security challenges, highlighting how convicted individuals involved in smuggling arms are reportedly being released under UN-mediated agreements.

A letter from Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council warned U.N. officials about how ongoing agreements could involve individuals charged with transferring weapons to the Houthis. This situation underscores the complexities and unresolved issues surrounding the Yemeni crisis.

In light of these developments, the U.S. State Department has condemned the activities of Iran and the Houthis, labeling them as dangerous and a destabilizing factor for regional security and global supply chains. Additionally, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a halt to aggression in the Red Sea, emphasizing the potential risks to sailors and global trade.

As tensions mount, the Iranian threat to utilize the Houthis in closing the Bab el-Mandeb offers a glimpse of the increasingly volatile dynamics at play in the region. The future of this strategic waterway remains uncertain.
