Following the release of the report, the Trump 2024 campaign acknowledged that it had been the target of a cyberattack that led to the theft of election documents.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang told Politico on August 10 that the leak came from “foreign sources hostile to the United States,” but as the race for the White House heats up, the leak marks a significant development in the field of foreign interference in U.S. elections.
Politico reported that it began receiving emails from an anonymous source using the pseudonym “Robert” on July 22. The emails reportedly contained internal Trump campaign documents, including a 271-page dossier about Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), who was vetted as a potential vice presidential running mate and later selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate.
Chang pointed to the Microsoft report and findings that Iranian hackers had breached the accounts of senior U.S. campaign officials as evidence that a foreign adversary was behind the intrusion of the Trump campaign.
Donald Trump acknowledged the intrusion and said it was the work of the Iranian government.
“They only had access to publicly available information, but they still shouldn’t have done this,” Trump said.
