Witkov Addresses Iran’s Stance on Nuclear Weapons
WASHINGTON – Senior adviser and assistant to the President, Steve Witkov, shared with Breitbart News that the Iranian government has acknowledged the sentiment among Iranians against nuclear weapons.
Witkov made this statement during an exclusive, lengthy interview at the White House on Thursday, where he discussed significant negotiations involving Iran’s Islamic Republic and President Trump. He is gearing up for meetings with Iranian representatives following talks in both Iran and Rome, possibly in Oman, part of a continuing series of discussions. Witkov plans to meet with them this week amid his broader trip to the Middle East, which includes President Trump’s visits to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. Although Witkov will accompany Trump, he has been instructed to engage with Iranians separately in Oman.
“We presented our stance clearly. Iranians cannot possess bombs, and they indicated they don’t want them,” Witkov explained to Breitbart News. “For this dialogue, I must communicate what we believe is necessary. If that’s how they feel, the enrichment facilities need to go. They should not have any centrifuge capabilities. There cannot be enrichment capacity at those sites. If they wish to expand their program, that’s a non-starter for us. No enrichment means demolition, and those facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan must be taken down.”
When asked if the final agreement would mirror the past Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from the Obama era or present a stricter arrangement, Witkov noted that Iran was in a “more vulnerable” situation during previous negotiations.
“I think we’re actually in a more precarious position now. However, the goal is to sit down with them, discuss, and provide reasoning for our stance,” he said. “They may not go along with it, but it puzzles me why they wouldn’t. First off, we won’t engage in JCPOA-like agreements without sanctions remaining in place or obligations that don’t just disappear. That approach didn’t work before.”
Witkov believes it would be “unwise” for Iranians to test President Trump, positing they have no option but to accept U.S. demands regarding denuclearization.
“I consider myself a reasonable and astute person,” Witkov remarked. “I genuinely think they lack alternatives. Sure, they can reject and challenge President Trump, but that doesn’t seem smart to me. They pretend to want nuclear capabilities, but don’t actually have the means.”
He further emphasized that the U.S. wouldn’t accept poor deals, indicating a willingness to walk away if negotiations prove unfruitful.
“Absolutely,” Witkov affirmed when questioned about the U.S. stance on unfavorable agreements. “Last week’s discussions didn’t yield results we considered valuable. We need to reach some mutual understanding, hoping discussions will be productive this Sunday. If they aren’t, we may have to rethink our approach.”
While current discussions focus on nuclear issues, Witkov expressed that, similar to the inclusion of human rights clauses in past agreements with the Soviet Union, future negotiations might also touch on matters like ceasing financial and military support for groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
“We’re inviting Iran to join the League of Nations,” Witkov stated. “They have a rich history and possess many valuable qualities. Our discussions at the moment are confined to nuclear matters, but we do believe they should halt their support for groups we view as adversaries. Yet, we want to stay focused on the nuclear situation, as that is our primary concern that needs urgent resolution.”
Further details from Witkov’s exclusive interview with Breitbart News are forthcoming.
