Joint Statement Against Iran’s Actions
A statement was released on Thursday by the US, UK, and twelve other Western nations, condemning Iran for its efforts to “assassinate, lure, and intimidate foreign citizens” through collaborations with criminal networks.
These countries pointed out that Iran’s intelligence agencies are specifically targeting dissidents, Jewish citizens, journalists, and both current and former government officials in Europe and North America. They view this as a direct infringement on national sovereignty.
“We stand united against Iran’s intelligence operations aimed at harming individuals in Europe and North America,” said a statement endorsed by Canada, Germany, and France.
Additionally, the virtual US embassy declared, “We view this as a breach of our sovereignty, no matter who is targeted. We are dedicated to collaborating to prevent these actions and urge Iranian authorities to halt such illegal activities in their territories.”
More than a dozen countries have labeled Iran’s actions as “unacceptable”, citing incidents in nations such as Albania, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.
Their concerns extend beyond international responsibilities, as they remain vigilant regarding the safety of citizens in Europe and North America amid Tehran’s hostile maneuvers. This announcement follows rising geopolitical tensions after a US strike in Iran last month.
Reports suggest Iran is increasingly engaging in clandestine operations targeting foreigners. The country was linked to an assassination plot against former presidential candidate Donald Trump prior to the 2024 election, along with similar threats in Europe and the US last fall.
The UK disclosed over twenty incidents related to Iran since 2022, involving the killing or targeting of individuals on British soil or targeting British nationals.
Journalists and activists have faced threats in the US, attributed to Iranian plots. Notably, a scheme was uncovered following the protests that erupted after the death of a woman arrested in Iran for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly.
Tehran has consistently denied any involvement in such assassination or abduction plots.
