Iran on the Edge of Revolution: Implications for Global Dynamics

As Iran hovers on the brink of revolution, the possibility of dismantling one of the world’s most notorious sponsors of terrorism could lead to significant shifts in global power structures. This situation holds considerable importance for the United States and its allies, with a fair share of credit possibly going to President Donald Trump.

If Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is ousted and a new government emerges, many Iranians might express their gratitude towards President Trump. There are even reports of streets being renamed in his honor, which seems quite reasonable given the relentless pressure he applied on the theocratic regime, effectively weakening its hold.

Trump has issued warnings about potential U.S. retaliation should Iranian authorities harm protesters, stating that America is “ready to help.” It appears his threats are being taken seriously, especially after a notable bombing of a nuclear facility last August, demonstrating his willingness to use military force. His administration has showcased exceptional military capabilities, particularly evident when rescuing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

In a recent conflict between Israel and Iran, Trump mentioned, “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding,” implying he’s an easy target. But as he noted, “we’re not going to take him out… at least not for now.” The president expressed mounting frustration, aiming to prevent missile attacks on civilians and American troops.

Despite a troubling context, as communication was cut off and reports surfaced indicating around 500 dead protesters and over 10,000 arrests, some believe the actual numbers might be even greater. This isn’t the first time Trump has confronted a theocratic state; back in 2020, he ordered the drone strike that killed Major General Qasem Soleimani, a significant figure in Iran’s military operations.

Soleimani’s assassination sent shockwaves through Iranian military circles at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions. Despite Iran’s vows for retaliation, the mullahs appeared to fear taking direct action against Trump.

Trump also strongly supports Israel, especially in its confrontations with Iranian-backed Hamas following the group’s brutal attacks. In contrast, President Joe Biden’s support for Israel has been tested amid dissent from pro-Palestinian factions within his party.

Biden has criticized Israel’s tactics against Hamas in his State of the Union address, imposed sanctions on Israeli entities, and even blocked military requests for substantial weaponry. It seems he has shifted towards a more restrained approach, particularly in dealing with Iranian nuclear threats.

During Trump’s first term, he notably supported military actions against Iranian interests, including a series of airstrikes on Houthi rebels after attacks on maritime assets. Tensions with Hezbollah are also likely to escalate as this Lebanese group is implicated in suppressing protests back home.

After a meeting with Trump in December, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly felt empowered to act against Lebanon but was advised to wait for further negotiations with the U.S.

The unfolding fate of the Iranian government is imminent. Should Khamenei and his regime be replaced by a more pro-Western administration, there could be widespread benefits for the West, particularly for Israel and Gulf Arab nations. Trump’s heavy sanctions on Iran’s oil sector, which drastically reduced its financial reserves, have been pivotal in setting the stage for these changes.

During Trump’s tenure, Iran saw its foreign exchange reserves plummet, a stark contrast to recent times under Biden, where Tehran has seen a resurgence in its oil exports and financial stability, including a controversial six-billion-dollar financial exchange linked to a prisoner swap.

Biden’s lenient policies towards Iran are often criticized as one of the more significant foreign policy missteps, with many recalling past mistakes in Biden’s long political career. Luckily, Trump seems to retain a clear vision for U.S. interests in the Middle East. While Biden once stated, “American leadership is what brings the world together,” Trump’s strategies have shown a remarkable deployment of American power focused on securing allies and prioritizing U.S. interests.
