Iran Responds to IAEA Resolution with New Uranium Enrichment Plans
Iran’s government has sharply criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after the organization passed a resolution condemning Iran’s nuclear activities. The resolution comes alongside Iran’s announcement to develop a new uranium enrichment facility.
IAEA Director Rafael Grossi recently highlighted concerns about Iran’s nuclear capabilities, specifically citing three undisclosed nuclear sites that he claimed Iran has attempted to sanitize. This has raised serious alarms within the international community.
The resolution, passed on Thursday, marks a notable shift as it’s the first in nearly two decades to declare Iran in violation of its nuclear commitments. It pointed out Iran’s numerous failures since 2019 to adequately cooperate regarding undeclared nuclear materials and activities across various hidden locations.
The resolution also arrives just before anticipated talks between Iranian and U.S. officials set for Sunday, aimed at creating a framework for addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Uranium enrichment remains a contentious point in negotiations. Both former President Donald Trump and some members of his administration have made it clear that any agreement should strictly prohibit Iran from enriching uranium. Conversely, Iranian officials maintain that countries that engage in uranium enrichment are non-negotiable and emphasize that their primary goal in talks is to lift what they term as sanctions on illegitimate regimes.
As the discussions unfold, Iranian officials have ramped up their defiant rhetoric, especially following the IAEA’s public statements of concern. On Thursday, both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran declared their intent to not only reject limitations on their enrichment activities but also to expedite the construction of a new enrichment facility.
In a statement, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization mentioned that an order had been issued to establish this new facility in a secure location, replacing outdated centrifuges at the Fordow site with advanced IR-6 models.
These organizations dismissed the IAEA’s latest resolutions as politically motivated, accusing the U.S. and allied Western nations of exerting undue influence over international institutions to shape the narrative surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Esmail Bakaei, condemned the actions of the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany, labeling their participation in the IAEA as problematic. Despite their strong objections, the Iranian officials warned of potential responses if further sanctions were considered based on the IAEA’s findings.
In a statement to Tasnim News, a government-affiliated outlet, a spokesperson noted that Iran has turned these challenges into opportunities to enhance its nuclear technology, largely thanks to the innovative efforts of its youth.
Additionally, Iran has lodged a formal complaint with the UN Security Council, threatening to take further actions if more sanctions were imposed based on the IAEA’s report. This letter was sent shortly before the passage of the resolution and was a response to concerns by France, the U.K., and Germany regarding Iran’s adherence to the 2015 nuclear deal.
The 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has been severely undermined due to Iran’s repeated violations, with the U.S. withdrawing from it in 2018. Despite this, some signatories remain committed. Last year, Grossi remarked that the deal is merely a formality and lacks real substance.
Iravani, an Iranian envoy, defended Iran against accusations from European powers, arguing that there’s no international law mandating limits on uranium enrichment, even though Grossi expressed concerns about Iran’s enrichment rate. He emphasized that the focus should be on preventing the diversion of nuclear material for non-peaceful purposes.
In closing, Irabani asserted that the true threat to global stability lies not in Iran’s nuclear pursuits but rather in the ongoing reliance by some nations on unilateral actions that breach international law and undermine the credibility of global institutions. He cautioned against any attempts to reinstate prior UNSC resolutions, warning that such measures could have grave implications for regional and international security.
