Iran Secures Peace Agreement After Losing Many of Its Senior Officials

Operation Epic Fury: A Major Blow to Iranian Leadership

During Operation Epic Fury, numerous Iranian officials and military figures were targeted, resulting in the deaths of several key leaders, including Ayatollah Khamenei, the second supreme leader of Iran.

“The scale of these targeted killings is staggering,” said an anti-government website, Iran International. “Together, they represent a significant portion of Iran’s military and security leadership.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) faced particularly heavy losses.

The operation began on February 28 when an Israeli military strike hit a gathering that included Khamenei and senior defense officials. Reports suggest he was killed alongside prominent figures such as Ali Shamkhani, a top military advisor as well as the leader of nuclear negotiations, and several others integral to Iran’s defense strategies.

There is still uncertainty regarding the fate of Mojtaba Khamenei, the Ayatollah’s son and expected successor. Officially named the new supreme leader by the Revolutionary Guards on March 9, he was rumored to have been injured in the same attack that reportedly killed his father. Despite some statements made through intermediaries, Mojtaba has remained out of the public eye since the conflict escalated.

Another significant casualty was Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. After Khamenei’s assassination, it was believed he would assume control, but reports confirmed that he too was killed in an Israeli strike on March 17.

A considerable number of officials killed were connected to nuclear and missile programs. This included senior military personnel who spearheaded research and development within Iran’s military framework.

Also among the deceased was Admiral Alireza Tansiri, the Iranian Navy’s Commander. Following his death, an Army Secretary updated President Trump about the drastic loss of naval capabilities in Iran.

Iran experienced a significant loss of intelligence officials as well, with Intelligence Minister Esmail Kahat reportedly eliminated on March 18 during an Israeli airstrike. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned this act as a “despicable assassination” and expressed national grief over the incident.

Opinions among some Iranians seem mixed, with a few expressing relief that influential members of the regime’s oppressive machinery were targeted, including figures like Kahat and Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the Basij militia, who was killed shortly before Kahat.

Soleimani was reportedly meeting with other militia officials at the time of his death, which potentially included additional high-ranking members.

A Tehran resident mentioned, “The scale of these targeted killings is staggering. They represented a crucial part of the upper leadership, though replacements have been designated.” This sentiment was echoed when news of a significant death was announced.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the removal of numerous Iranian leaders as a key achievement. He remarked that the operation targeted nuclear scientists, dismantled the leadership of the Islamic Republic, and destroyed vital military installations.

Estimates suggest that around 50 Iranian officials have been killed during the conflict, although some deaths remain unconfirmed, complicating the effort to determine an exact figure. The classification of who qualifies as a “senior official” can also be quite subjective.
