Iran has recently proposed that upcoming nuclear discussions with the United States take place in Oman. This was communicated by a source familiar with the discussions, highlighting Iran’s desire to modify how future negotiations are structured.
This request aligns with reports indicating that Iranian officials are advocating for a more exclusive format. They want to exclude other Arab and regional nations, suggesting that negotiations should only involve the U.S. and Iran. This shift could, perhaps, complicate U.S. diplomatic efforts in the area.
The State Department has not confirmed whether these consultations are set or the format they might follow.
On another front, President Trump mentioned that Iran has purportedly set conditions related to a potential military action. There seems to be rising tension as Tehran weighs the option to resume nuclear talks, with Turkey possibly hosting the talks and regional players like Saudi Arabia and Qatar getting involved.
Substantial protests and crackdowns throughout Iran are adding layers of complexity to this situation. President Trump indicated that a significant military presence, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, is en route to the region, heightening concerns.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt mentioned that discussions between the U.S. and Iran are still on track, emphasizing that special envoy Steve Witkoff is actively involved in these diplomatic efforts.
Levitt elaborated, saying, “I just spoke with Special Envoy Witkoff. The talks are still in the plan, and the president is always inclined toward diplomacy. However, successful negotiations require cooperation from both sides.”
She also noted that, while the focus is on diplomacy, military options are still being considered. Mentioning a past operation aimed at diminishing Iran’s nuclear capabilities, she hinted at the seriousness of America’s position.
The situation escalated recently when six Iranian gunboats attempted to interfere with a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. They failed in their efforts, as the tanker managed to escape, aided by a U.S. Navy ship.
Further, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command reported that an Iranian drone was shot down after an aggressive approach toward a U.S. aircraft carrier. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to military equipment were reported in this incident.
