Container Ships Seized by Iran in Strait of Hormuz

Recent reports indicate that two container ships have been seized by Iranian forces in the critical Strait of Hormuz. This incident occurred as the vessels were en route to the port of Bandar Abbas.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran asserted that the ships, named MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, were operating without the necessary permits and were accused of tampering with their navigation systems. However, independent verification of these claims has not been possible.

A relative of one of the crew members reported that around 20 armed Iranians boarded the ship. While the sailors are reportedly under Iranian control, their treatment has been described as relatively good, with their movement on board being restricted. This was shared with a news outlet by the relative.

According to the news agency, both vessels, managed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, had a combined crew of 40 and were taken to Bandar Abbas.

Montenegro’s Maritime Minister mentioned that the MSC Francesca is currently anchored about nine nautical miles from the Iranian coast. He indicated that discussions between MSC and Iran are ongoing, emphasizing the safety of the sailors onboard.

It’s worth noting that before this seizure, both ships reported coming under fire in the strait, highlighting the escalating tensions in this important maritime route. This situation follows a recent incident where U.S. military forces seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship near Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman.

Military sources disclosed that the Iranian cargo ship, named Touska, remains under U.S. control as inspections continue. The cargo is suspected to be dual-use material, which could serve both civilian and military purposes.

As of now, the U.S. military is maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports, a situation that has seen 33 ships diverted since the onset of the blockade.
