Iran, US begin negotiations over Tehran’s advancing nuclear program

Iran and the US began negotiations in Oman on Saturday over Tehran’s advance nuclear program, with talks likely relying on the Islamic Republic’s enrichment of uranium.

Talks began on Saturday in Muscat capital, Oman, according to Iranian state media. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut and US Middle Eastern envoy Steve Witkov did not present immediate details of the talks.

Araguchi arrived in Oman on Friday to meet with the Foreign Minister of Oman Badr al-Busadi, who had mediated two previous talks in Muscat and Rome. Araguchi saw him heading for consultation late Saturday morning.

Witkov arrived on Saturday for consultations that were expected to begin in the coming hours.

The negotiations are trying to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the United States, which will lift several sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch airstrikes targeting Iranian programs if the deal is not reached. Iranian officials have warned that uranium stockpiles can be enriched to weapons-grade levels to pursue nuclear weapons.

Iran’s nuclear deal in 2015 led to years of conflict and tension as foreign countries limited Tehran before Trump unilaterally withdrawn from the agreement in 2018.

Trump repeatedly hoped that negotiations would lead to a new nuclear deal, but he still proposed the possibility of a military strike if the deal was not reached.

“The situation in Iran is coming out very well,” Trump said in Air Force 1 when he traveled to Rome for Pope Francis’ funeral. “We’ve had a lot of discussions with them. I think we’re going to trade. I’d rather trade than other alternatives. That’s good for humanity.”

“Some people want to do another kind of trade — a much more troublesome trade — and if they can avoid it, they don’t want it to happen to Iran,” he added.
