Iran's fatal assaults on American troops and civilians have lasted over 30 years.

As the U.S. considers its future involvement in the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, many officials have reflected on Iran’s long history of targeting Americans globally, which spans about four decades. Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas remarked that Iran has essentially waged a continuous war against the U.S., Israel, and the rest of the civilized world since 1979.

This conflict includes various forms of aggression from Iran, such as direct assaults and proxy attacks on U.S. military personnel, support for terrorist organizations, and attempts at assassination.

Background of Hostility

Historically, there have been significant events marking this hostile relationship. For instance, during the early phase of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979, radical students took over the U.S. embassy in Tehran, leading to a hostage crisis that lasted for 444 days.

Notorious Attacks

In a recent interview, an Iranian official acknowledged Iran’s involvement in two significant bombings in 1983 that resulted in American fatalities in Lebanon. The bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut claimed 63 lives, including 17 Americans, while a subsequent truck bombing in military barracks killed 241 service members, including U.S. Marines and Navy sailors.

These incidents exemplify a pattern of violence attributed to Iran over the years. In subsequent years, Iran was linked to attacks like the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing, which killed 19 U.S. service members, with a court later holding Iran accountable.

Ongoing Conflicts

A report from the Pentagon notes that Iran has been implicated in the deaths of hundreds of U.S. soldiers in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. The situation escalated in recent years, with legal actions taken against Iran for supporting terrorist actions against American personnel.

In more recent developments, the U.S. witnessed several attacks attributed to Iran-backed militias in Syria and Iraq.

Overall, these incidents paint a complex picture of Iran’s long-standing engagement in conflict with the U.S., highlighting a cycle of violence and retaliation that continues to evolve.

Additionally, there has been a history of wrongful imprisonment and hostage situations, dating back decades. Notably, a recent exchange of prisoners occurred in September 2023, involving the release of several individuals, which included the unfreezing of billions in assets.

The Justice Department has also reported on assassination plots linked to Iranian operatives, underlining the ongoing threats to American citizens. This persistent state of hostility raises significant concerns about the future dynamics in the region.
