Irish hip hop group Kneecap is facing consequences after a controversial statement made during their performance at Coachella on April 18th.
The trio, consisting of DJ Provaí, Mo Chara, and Móglaí Bap, has cancelled their planned tour in Germany.
Two major festivals in Germany, Hurricane and South Side, have also removed the group from their lineups. Further, several shows in cities like Cologne, Berlin, and Hamburg have been cancelled as well.
Kneecap has criticized these cancellations, alleging that the festivals aim to suppress their voice and that of other artists.
The band stirred controversy last month with messages displayed on stage in California, including slogans like “Fuck Israel, Free Palestine” and claims regarding Israel’s actions against Palestinians.
One message highlighted U.S. support, stating it was facilitated by the government despite accusations of war crimes.
On social media, they argued that their performance edits were intentional efforts from the organizers to discredit them.
In the aftermath, the group faced several cancellations due to allegations of promoting hatred.
They have aimed to redirect the conversation towards broader issues, asserting that the real story lies in the situation in Gaza rather than their actions.
In a recent social media update, they condemned the British government for its support of Israel, which they describe as complicit in war crimes.
Additionally, the group clarified that they do not endorse terrorism, claiming that any misunderstanding stems from their statements being taken “out of context.”
