WASHINGTON – Gary Shapley, who became a conservative folk hero when the Justice Department revealed he played a favorite in a survey of former eldest son Hunter Biden, was banished from his role as an IRS commissioner a few days after being promoted to the position, a source familiar with the shake-up said Friday.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent has replaced Shapley with Deputy Director Michael Folkender following the power struggle over his appointment with leading Trump adviser Elon Musk.
The reorganization was first reported by the New York Times.
Musk’s Government Efficiency (DOGE) pushed the White House for Shapley to take over the IRS.
But Bescent felt he had been ruled out of decision-making. He then asked President Trump if he could set up Faulkender instead.
The proxy committee will only be conducted until former GOP Rep. Billy Long is vetted and confirmed by the Senate to lead the collection agency.
“President Trump is no secret that he has put together a team of people who are extremely passionate about issues affecting our country,” White House press chief Carolyn Leavitt said in a statement.
“Disagreements are a normal part of a healthy policy process, and in the end everyone knows they will serve President Trump’s joy.”
Tapped last month as Bescent’s senior adviser, Shapley was appointed proxy IRS head after Melanie Kraus’ departure.
Klaus left the IRS on Tuesday, but Shapley remains in senior position in the commissioner’s office despite being removed from the interim role of the top.

Among the terrible claims was that a Biden-appointed US lawyer based in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, refused to file charges against his then-son son, but then assistant Delaware attorney Leslie Wolf discouraged investigators from pursuing a line of questions relating to Joe Biden.
