Some American taxpayers will receive a surprise financial aid by the end of January.
The Internal Revenue Service announced it will provide new stimulus payments worth $2.4 billion to Americans who missed previous payments. The agency announced it has discovered nearly 1 million eligible taxpayers who never claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.
Individual payments can be up to $1,400.
IRS Commissioner Danny Wuerffel said in a news release that in most cases, payments will be automatically deposited directly or sent as paper checks by the end of January. Eligible taxpayers don't need to do anything to receive a check. They will receive a letter notifying them of their stimulus payment.
“The IRS continues to work hard to improve and assist taxpayers,” Werfel said in the release. “To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we are automating these payments, meaning these people must file an amended return to receive it. Taxpayers who did not file a 2021 tax return may still be eligible to receive a stimulus check if they file a 2021 return and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by April 15, 2025 The Department of Revenue said.
Stimulus payments of up to $1,400 were paid to Americans as part of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill. To get the check, Americans needed to earn less than $75,000 a year, or less than $150,000 as a household.
The check was one of three stimulus checks totaling $814 billion during the pandemic. In March 2020, eligible individuals received up to $1,200 per income tax filer and $500 per child under the CARES Act. In December 2020, eligible individuals received up to $600 per income tax filer and $600 per child under the Consolidated Appropriations Act. In March 2021, eligible individuals received up to $1,400 per income tax filer and $1,400 per child under the American Rescue Plan Act.
The agency said most taxpayers eligible for the stimulus package have already received their checks.
