The IRS fired 6,000 employees on Thursday.

The IRS has approximately 100,000 employees overall.

Reuters reported:

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service will fire around 6,700 employees on Thursday, and those familiar with the issue will be told that a restructuring that could strain tax agency resources during the critical tax file season Ta.

Workers who are being cut off are probation workers who have been on agency for less than a year or two, and enjoy less protection than long-term workers. The IRS has a total of approximately 100,000 employees.

The IRS cuts have led an unprecedented effort to reduce bureaucracy amid the orders of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk that have led to more widespread reductions in federal officials.

Like other agencies, the IRS was ordered last week to dismiss all probation employees by the Human Resources Administration, which oversees federal employment.

However, the IRS has taken a more cautious approach than most other agencies due to concerns about narrowing down resources at the April 15 tax return deadline just two months later. The IRS remains busy weeks after the deadline and weeks after processing taxpayer returns and refunds.

It is unknown if there will be more layoffs.

Politico reported:

Those familiar with agency planning are unclear whether there will be a wave of additional layoffs.

In a video message to employees at the agency's Kansas City facility, union officials said there will be fewer people out there.

“Today, we received a notification that an SB/SE employee on probation is scheduled to be fired,” Shannon Ellis said, referring to the agency's SME/self-employed department. .

In another video message, Ellis said: Probation employee.

“We are not sure if this will affect people other than probation employees,” said Ellis, president of Chapter 66 National Treasury Employees Union.
