IRS reportedly planning to slash workforce by 40,000 employees

Sources told The Associated Press said the Internal Revenue Service has reportedly cut 40,000 of its 90,000 workforce.

Former IRS commissioner John Koskinen told the Associated Press that the IRS would be “dysfunctional” if the plan was implemented.

Reducing the IRS workforce is part of the government's efficiency mission to reduce the size of government.

According to a previous report in February, the department already had around 7,000 employees. Probation has been challenged in court and has recently been closed by a Clinton-appointed judge.

The AP report noted that the IRS workforce consists of 56% of minority employees and 65% of female employees.

Former IRS commissioner John Koskinen told the Associated Press that if the plan was implemented, the IRS would be “difficult” in the IRS. Koskinen faced intense criticism from Republicans over allegations that the IRS targeted conservative organisations during his time as a commissioner under the Obama administration.

The deliberations were first reported by the New York Times.
