An individual found themselves in hot water after allegedly stealing over $2,600 worth of premium wine from Gelson’s supermarket in Irvine. The suspect managed to escape the scene, prompting the police to seek the public’s assistance in identifying him.
Authorities have identified the man from the surveillance footage depicting the theft.
The Irvine Police Department made a cheeky remark in an Instagram post, suggesting that the thief took “grasp life through glass” a bit too literally. They underscored that at such a price point, it wasn’t merely a bad choice but a criminal offense.
The suspect is described as a black male, dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt, dark slacks, brown shoes, and wearing glasses during the incident.
Police have released video clips and are urging anyone who recognizes him to reach out.
The bizarre nature of the crime has raised eyebrows, with the authorities labeling it a “full-blown felony” and a “poor decision.”
They further encouraged onlookers, “If you see him, please don’t bottle it,” and asked to contact Detective Drake at JDrake@cityofirvine.org to help resolve the case.
According to California Penal Code 487, theft involving property worth over $950 qualifies as grand larceny. Considering the stolen amount exceeds $2,600, it’s categorized as “volatile,” which could lead to charges as either a misdemeanor or a felony.
If convicted of a felony, the suspect could face a prison sentence ranging from 16 months to three years, along with potential fines of up to $10,000 and the obligation to return the stolen wine to Gelson’s.
The court may also put a restraining order in place, preventing the suspect from entering the supermarket for up to two years.
If classified as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty would be up to a year in county jail.
