Iryna Zarutska’s Suspected Assassin Yells at Federal Judge About ‘Substance in His Body’

North Carolina Republicans Call for the Dismissal of Judge Who Released Suspected Murderer of Ukraine Refugee

Outburst in Court Over Stabbing Case

DeCarlos Brown Jr., charged with the murder of Ukrainian refugee Irina Zalutka on a Charlotte light rail train, reportedly erupted in a federal courtroom. He screamed at the judge, expressing his plans to reach out to the FBI and claimed he had “a substance in his body.” He also demanded to know if the judge had reviewed a specific evaluation of his mental state.

Authorities had to escort Brown from the courtroom after he continued yelling, including questions about a letter from his mother.

A judge decided that Brown would remain detained. He is set to undergo several months of treatment to help restore his mental competency. The court may revisit the issue of forced medication to determine its constitutionality at a later date.

Brown was taken into custody in September and charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Zalutka in the throat during a ride on August 22, 2025. Surveillance footage captured the moment he pulled out a knife and attacked her.

This brutal incident has drawn strong reactions, including calls from former President Donald Trump for the death penalty for Brown. He characterized Brown as an “animal” that committed a horrific act against a woman seeking safety in America.

Brown’s criminal history includes multiple convictions for serious offenses such as armed robbery and felony theft.

Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) commented on the situation, criticizing the judicial leniency that allowed Brown to remain free despite previous charges, emphasizing that innocent lives are endangered by such decisions.
