LeBron James’ future is increasingly uncertain.
If you had asked me earlier this season whether he would play a 24th year, I would have said yes without hesitation. Many who know him, like his close friend Kevin Love, thought similarly.
Love, who shared a championship with James in Cleveland back in 2016, spent time with him right before the Lakers faced Utah on November 18. He was careful, though, not to speculate on James’ future.
When I pressed Love about whether it could be James’ last season, he responded, “I don’t think that will happen, but it is likely by the end of next year.”
But things may have shifted.
James seems pretty ambivalent about what’s next. When asked about his plans for Sunday’s All-Star Game, he appeared unsure. “I want to live,” he remarked. “If I get it, you guys get it too. I don’t get it. Not at all.”
It’s surprising to think a player like James, so skilled at handling the media and curating his narrative, might not have a plan. But, perhaps he simply needs time to figure out how he really feels.
Some days, the 41-year-old radiates happiness. A recent game against Dallas illustrates this; he danced and smiled before the tipoff while becoming the oldest NBA player to achieve a triple-double, scoring 28 points with 10 rebounds and 12 assists.
Yet, there are moments when he seems uncertain, like during some off-court drama with Jeanie Buss last month. After a narrow loss to Oklahoma City, he confessed, “I’m so tired,” echoing that sentiment. It makes you wonder where his heart really lies.
As time passes, the uncertainty surrounding one of basketball’s greatest careers only grows.
If I had to guess how things might unfold, here’s my take:
1. James Returns to Cleveland
He shed tears watching a tribute video in Cleveland recently, which isn’t something he often does. This emotional moment felt reminiscent of his 2016 championship win and when he became the league’s leading scorer.
A return to Cleveland would represent a full circle for James, as this is where it all began for him in 2003. He quickly became the sport’s face and led the Cavs to victory against Golden State in the 2016 Finals, where he famously claimed to be the greatest player of all time.
It’s worth noting that the Cavaliers have signaled their intent to win now, having made significant trades recently. James has applauded their efforts, saying they’re “going for it.” This could genuinely align with his desire to chase another title alongside Donovan Mitchell.
Mitchell himself has expressed admiration for James. When asked about possibly teaming up, he smiled but stressed his focus on the current team. It’s clear the admiration goes both ways.
2. James Returns to the Lakers
At the season’s start, James was confident he would retire wearing the Lakers jersey, a team he has grown to love. But he also faces the reality of uprooting his family or spending time apart. After eight seasons in LA, the longest tenure of his career, this decision weighs heavily on him.
But uncertainty looms here as well. Reports have surfaced about tensions with the Lakers’ management concerning James’ influence. With shifts in team priorities, particularly around star player Luka Doncic, James’ role remains unclear.
The future could involve significant changes, particularly with James’ sizable contract and the team’s intent to renew other key players. Discussions about his potential retirement or future are now rife.
3. James Retires
It’s hard to picture James skipping a farewell tour, which impacts how I rank this possibility. He still plays at a high level, averaging over 22 points a game and maintaining a prominent presence on the court. He often mentions he’d continue until he simply can’t any longer, and he’s not at that point yet.
4. James Joins Golden State
James once remarked that if he could team up with any player, it would be Steph Curry. They faced off in four straight Finals, developing mutual respect over the years. Both are nearing the end of their careers and teaming up could yield championship opportunities.
However, it seems far-fetched that he’d switch teams at this stage. There’s a possibility Gold State considered trading for him, and Draymond Green has expressed a desire to play alongside him. Still, he doesn’t see a clear path to make it happen.
