Concerns Over Hantavirus in the U.S.

With hantavirus cases increasing, many Americans are feeling uneasy about the potential for a new outbreak in the U.S.

However, according to U.S. News & World Report, this concern might be somewhat unfounded. The publication recently ranked the U.S. 18th in terms of public health preparedness.

This ranking is part of the Best Country ratings that were released recently. The measure of public health preparedness considered factors like vaccination rates, ability to conduct medical research, and past death tolls from outbreaks, including over 1.2 million deaths attributed to COVID-19.

U.S. News explained that smaller countries, such as Denmark, Switzerland, and Singapore, have demonstrated strong underlying health systems and fast response capabilities during health crises. In contrast, larger nations like the U.S., UK, and Germany grapple with “scale and complexity” in their pandemic responses.

This might not bring much comfort to individuals concerned about the Andes virus—a rare and lethal strain of hantavirus—reported on the cruise ship MV Hondius. Tragically, three passengers have died, leading to federal quarantine for the remaining 18 passengers after they disembarked recently. They will remain isolated for the entire 42-day incubation period.

What sets the Andes virus apart is its ability to spread between people, unlike typical hantaviruses that are usually transmitted through contact with infected rodent waste.

In the realm of public health preparedness, the U.S. scored 74.7 out of 100 for epidemic mortality, 86.8 for immunization rates, and 63.4 for medical research. It’s worth noting that there are 17 countries that ranked higher.
