NuScale Power: A Nuclear Vision

NuScale Power (NYSE:SMR) is a company in the nuclear technology space with ambitious plans focused on small modular reactors (SMRs).

Based in Portland, Oregon, NuScale has the distinction of being the only U.S. nuclear firm that has secured approval for its SMR design from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). While several nuclear-focused startups exist, including Oklo and nano nuclear energy, NuScale stands alone with the license to roll out small nuclear reactor technology at a commercial scale.

First mover advantage hasn’t really propelled its stock prices much; currently, its shares hover around $14. The company has struck a deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to implement its technology in a power plant project in Romania, yet substantial sales have eluded it.

This has left NuScale grappling with losses and a dwindling cash reserve. It might take several years before the company sees profitability.

On the bright side, it could also represent a significant chance for NuScale. Research indicates that demand for data center power could surge by up to 175% by 2030, according to Goldman Sachs.

The U.S. power grid, largely constructed in the post-World War II era, simply isn’t equipped to meet such soaring power demands. New energy solutions are essential to support current infrastructure and address the impending energy challenges, placing NuScale’s factory-assembled reactors in a potentially advantageous position.

With a market capitalization of $4.3 billion and trailing 12-month revenues of roughly $64 million, the stock is priced at about 68 times its sales. That’s a pretty hefty valuation based on its income.

While NuScale holds the potential to transform the nuclear energy landscape, creating substantial returns for investors isn’t likely in the near term. Even at the current share price, investors must carefully consider possible long-term benefits against significant short-term fluctuations.
