Is this Texas university monitoring ICE?

Texas A&M is currently under scrutiny following an internal email from Alan Sams, the university’s Provost and Executive Vice President.

The email was titled “fix false information regarding immigration enforcement activities.”

Sams addressed concerns related to universities and their interactions with immigration enforcement in the graduate student community. He emphasized that, as guardians of employee and student data, universities shouldn’t share personal details about individuals unless legally required.

He reiterated the importance of “your safety, happiness and privacy.” The university takes personal issues seriously and is committed to a thorough and confidential investigation into the matter.

Sams added, “Oh, read among the people there,” referring to comments made by Blazetv host Sarah Gonzalez, who remarked on the situation as if it were a conspiratorial secret, implying a level of discomfort among individuals concerned about their status.

“They may passively share information about individuals who are undocumented; I can’t be sure,” she mentioned.

Sams cautioned that spreading misleading or incomplete information could complicate investigations and potentially harm those involved. While he could not comment on specific cases due to confidentiality rules, he promised vigilance in managing the flow of unauthorized information.

He clarified that “the university does not actively share information with the Immigration Bureau,” and advised anyone feeling unsafe or noticing suspicious activity to contact campus police immediately.

To sum up, he suggested, “We’re not going to collaborate with ICE. If you’re undocumented, your secret is safe with us.”
