Islanders edge past Blue Jackets in overtime to keep playoff hopes alive

Islanders Secure Overtime Win Against Blue Jackets

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Over recent years, the Islanders have often found themselves in situations similar to the Blue Jackets on Saturday night—facing a crucial game that could impact playoff hopes long before the season’s conclusion.

This time, however, it was the Islanders who were in the spotlights. Columbus entered the game six points behind them in the standings, with two games still to play. While a win wouldn’t entirely eliminate the Blue Jackets from playoff contention, a bigger gap would undoubtedly guide general manager Don Waddell as the trade deadline approached.

As it turned out, Waddell had plenty to reflect on. The Blue Jackets took a strong lead early in the game, making it 2-0, and they were in control for a while. But the Islanders turned things around, ultimately winning 4-3 in overtime thanks to Simon Holmstrom’s clutch goal. This setback left Columbus seven points from playoff positions and the energy in Nationwide Arena was palpable.

This match was the second in a road trip where the Islanders found themselves down in points during the second period, and yet again, they managed to overcome that deficit quickly.

Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each scored within just 22 seconds to equalize the game after the midway point. Following that, Scott Mayfield launched a powerful shot that put the Isles ahead 3-2 right before the second period ended.

Columbus rallied, tying the game again when Adam Fantilli deflected a shot off Zach Werenski, bringing the score to 3-3 heading into the final period.

As seen in their recent match against Montreal, the Islanders seemed to bring their best game when it mattered most.

Despite earlier struggles, they maintained pressure on the puck, transitioning smoothly across the lines, putting significant strain on Columbus goalie Jett Greaves.

Yet, Greaves remained formidable, forcing the game into overtime as neither team could secure victory until the final moments of regulation.

In the overtime period, the Islanders continued their unbeaten streak in 3-on-3 situations. Holmstrom’s tip-in off Tony DeAngelo’s outlet pass clinched the win.

They started the game sluggishly, with some mishandling of the puck. Aside from Cal Ritchie’s line, they seemed a bit out of sync.

Even star goalie Ilya Sorokin had an uncharacteristic slip-up, allowing a puck to slip through Isaac Lunderstrom’s tip just two and a half minutes into the game.

Mason Marchment, who had been a key player in their previous matchup, pushed the Blue Jackets ahead 2-0 early in the second period with a play that exploited the Islanders’ defense.

But Lee and Pageau, who had both scored in a previous comeback against Montreal, regrouped and found their offensive rhythm, pulling the Islanders back into contention.

Lee capitalized on a rebound from Mayfield, and shortly after, Pageau found the net as well, turning the tables on a game that seemed to have slipped away.

In this matchup, the Islanders demonstrated their resolve, seizing every chance with determination.

With this victory, it seems Columbus’ season could be hanging by a thread.
