Islanders Fall to Predators Despite Strong Start
The Islanders had a promising six minutes on Saturday night.
But, honestly, there were still 54 minutes to go.
Even with some impressive saves from Ilya Sorokin, the Islanders couldn’t hold off the Predators at UBS Arena, losing 4-3 after Roman Josi scored the game-winner, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The match was tied at three as the final period began, but the Predators had dominated the second period.
Puck management was lacking for the Islanders, and they struggled to maintain a forecheck, leaving Sorokin to fend for himself in front of the net.
Given Sorokin’s strong performances recently, it was almost surprising that this sloppiness didn’t cripple the team right away.
In fact, Tony DeAngelo didn’t hold back on the radio, stating, “Tonight sucks. This is just a bad game for us.”
In an ironic twist, DeAngelo almost scored shortly into the third period, but his goal was disallowed due to goalie interference.
The Islanders felt they had a case for a challenge, arguing that Anthony Duclair had made contact with Juuse Saros outside the crease, but they ended up losing that challenge.
Their play improved somewhat in the third period, but they still allowed too many opportunities for the Predators.
It was frustrating; players were mishandling the puck left and right, which ultimately did them in.
At one point, while playing at 4-on-4, Ryan Purock made a costly mistake by accidentally sending the puck out of the zone, resulting in an offside call. It was just one of several careless plays on the night.
Following a faceoff, Josi found the net again, putting the Predators ahead 4-3 with just under two minutes remaining.
The energy was high at the start of the game; fans thought an easy win was in the cards.
Matt Barzal opened the scoring in a bizarre fashion, converting a rebound from Anthony Duclair that bounced around before going in.
Not long after, the Islanders looked ready to secure victory when Matthew Schaefer netted his 15th goal, making it 2-0.
But, by the end of the first period, the Predators had clawed back into contention.
Filip Forsberg’s power-play goal narrowed the gap to 2-1, and Matthew Wood tied it up just a few minutes later by capitalizing on a turnover from behind the goal.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau put the Islanders ahead again early in the second with a quick strike, but that didn’t last long.
Forsberg managed to score again on a shot that slipped past Sorokin, blemishing what had otherwise been a solid second period for him.
Sorokin was crucial, stopping 22 shots in that period alone, including an exceptional save against Michael Bunting.
However, the Islanders, especially Schaefer and Scott Mayfield, were at fault for the turnover leading to Forsberg’s goal.
Pageau’s line held up well for much of the night, but Barzal’s unit, with Max Shabanov filling in for a sick Jonathan Drouin, started strong but faltered as the game progressed.
It was notably Bo Horvat’s best performance since returning from injury, making several notable plays, though nothing led to goals.
The developing chemistry among Ondrej Palat, Horvat, and Heinemann shows promise.
But, if the Islanders continue to lean on Sorokin like this, it could become a real issue down the line.
