Israeli Forces Conduct Strikes in Syria Amid Rising Tensions

On Wednesday, Israel reported that its military launched an attack close to the Syrian Ministry of Defense in Damascus. This move comes as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continue to keep a close watch on actions taken by the Assad regime against the Druze community in southern Syria. The IDF stated they are well-prepared for various possible scenarios in response to developments in the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on the situation, asserting the military’s role in protecting their “Druze brothers” and eliminating hostile forces. He cautioned Israeli Druze citizens against crossing into Syria, expressing concern for their safety. “Please don’t go near the border,” Netanyahu urged. “You’re risking your lives and complicating the IDF’s operations. Stay home and let us handle the situation.”

The conflict has escalated, particularly in the city of Sweida, where clashes have erupted between Syrian government forces and armed Druze groups. Syrian officials accused the local militias of violating a ceasefire agreement, prompting military action. They claimed to be trying to “prevent harm” while adhering to operational protocols.

Israel has threatened to intensify its involvement in Syria, stressing the importance of safeguarding the Druze—a religious minority with historical ties to Israel. The Druze mainly reside in Syria but also have significant populations in Israel and Lebanon. Netanyahu’s government highlighted a commitment to ensuring their safety, declaring the intent to maintain stability along the Israel-Syria border.

Interestingly, Druze individuals hold prominent positions within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Unlike many other minorities, they are not exempt from military service. A notable figure is Colonel Gassan Arian, who became the first non-Jewish commander of the Golani Brigade in 2015.
