Thwarted Hijacking on Flydubai Flight

Israeli officials have quickly labeled what initially seemed like a violent “brawl” on Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, as an attempted hijacking. Reports state that the copilot attempted to stab the captain with a knife, with plans to crash the aircraft.

An Israeli official mentioned to a local publication that “a major disaster was narrowly averted” thanks to the efforts of the flight crew and passengers who managed to restrain the knife-wielding copilot.

According to the Jerusalem Post, assessments from various Israeli security bodies, including the IDF and Mossad, indicate that this incident was intended as a terrorist act.

The flight, a Boeing 737, had taken off from Dubai with 174 passengers onboard, of which 166 were Israeli nationals, as indicated by reports from Israeli media.

In a dramatic turn of events, the aircraft suddenly dropped nearly 14,000 feet in a matter of seconds, issuing an emergency signal. Initially, the signal indicated a “general emergency” before switching to a code implying “unlawful interference,” and then reverting to the general emergency status.

Early information suggested that a mere “brawl” among the crew had necessitated an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, and officials did not initially characterize the event as a terrorist act.

However, within hours, officials redefined the situation as an attempted hijacking in statements to the international media. Videos uploaded by passengers showed a terrifying and bloody struggle in the cockpit.

Passengers reported that the crisis began when “the copilot stabbed the captain.” Eyewitness accounts described chaos, loss of airplane power, and bloodshed during the fight for control.

One passenger conveyed to Agence France-Presse that “the co-pilot tried to murder the pilot and basically carry out a suicide attack on the plane.”

Some passengers noted that disaster was averted through the bravery of fellow travelers who banded together with the flight crew to overpower the assailant. Remarkably, qualified pilots among the passengers helped regain control of the aircraft after the captain was injured.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz referred to the incident as a “jihadist terrorist attack” that was prevented “thanks to the heroism of a number of Israeli passengers.” Other officials similarly commended the passengers’ courage.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Dannon, remarked that the passengers displayed “extraordinary determination and resourcefulness,” helping to avert a potential catastrophe.

Prime Minister Netanyahu later confirmed in a video statement that one pilot had stabbed the other as they approached Israel, and the attacker appeared to be attempting to crash the plane with everyone on board.

Netanyahu recounted that a passenger collaborated with a crew member to overpower the assailant while he was trying to sabotage the plane’s systems, while another crew member managed to stabilize the aircraft.

Reports from various Israeli media outlets identified the pilots as possibly Omani, Emirati, Russian, or Ukrainian. At least one official indicated that the pilot involved in the attack was Omani.

The Jerusalem Post highlighted that many passengers left stranded in Saudi Arabia after the emergency landing declined to board another Flydubai flight sent to retrieve them, citing worries about the safety of the aircraft and the pilot.

Defense Minister Katz and the chief of staff for the Israel Defense Forces, Lt. Gen. Eyeal Zamir, are considering sending an Israeli military or chartered plane to facilitate their return. However, reports indicate that Saudi Arabia, not having established formal diplomatic ties with Israel, is refraining from allowing Israeli military flights to land.

Zamir has canceled a planned trip to the U.S. to manage this crisis, while Prime Minister Netanyahu has convened a meeting to address the security situation.

Afterward, Netanyahu’s office reassured that “the incident is under control, and all necessary measures are being taken to safely return the Israeli passengers to Israel.”
